Sheffield United have approached Atalanta to sign Ben Godfrey on loan and are waiting to hear back from the Italian club, sources have told Football Insider.
The 27-year-old defender boasts over a century of Premier League appearances during spells with Everton, Norwich City, and now Ipswich Town, having returned for the second half of last season.
With very limited minutes under Sean Dyche during the 2023/24 campaign, the centre-half sought a new challenge in the form of Serie A side Atalanta, but the move has been far from smooth sailing.
Since signing last summer, he has made just five appearances for Atalanta, being loaned to Ipswich during the winter transfer window, but could now be given an escape route back to England.
Ben Godfrey left Everton in 2024.
The Blades narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Premier League last season, with Chris Wilder leading the team to the Championship play-off finals before losing to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium.
Exits have been sanctioned for Kieffer Moore, Anel Ahmedhozic, and Rhian Brewster, leaving the squad extremely light ahead of a new season, and Sheffield United fans are outraged so far.
In place of the outgoing Ahmedhozic, Godfrey’s ability and experience would help solve a defensive problem this summer, but further departures could be expected at Bramall Lane.

Football Insider revealed last month that PSV Eindhoven had turned their attention to Gus Hamer, a key figure in United’s starting lineup over the last few seasons, and his sale would be season-defining.
Michael Cooper, Ollie Arblaster, and Sydie Peck have all attracted interest from the Premier League, but if the Blades are to aim for promotion next season, they need to be making additions rather than selling.

While Godfrey’s career in England came to a rather sorry end, with an even worse time in Italy, he would be a sensible addition for the season ahead, even if just for the next 12 months in the Championship.
Tyler Bindon and Jack Robinson are likely to form the current centre-back partnership, and although both players have their positives, zero reinforcements will be a huge concern for the supporters.
