Club Brugge are in talks to sign Southampton winger Samuel Edozie, sources have told Football Insider.

Edozie has been left out of the Saints’ squad to play Wrexham today on the first day of the new Championship campaign due to uncertainty over his future.

The 22-year-old winger spent last season out on loan in Belgium with Anderlecht, registering four goals and six assists in 32 games in all competitions.

New Southampton boss Will Still confirmed ahead of his side’s clash against Wrexham that Edozie was not set to play a part, and he now looks set to seal an exit with Brugge circling.

London-born Edozie was once a highly-rated talent emerging out of Manchester City’s youth set-up, but he made just one appearance for their senior side in 2021 before joining Southampton in September 2022.

He made 17 Premier League appearances in his maiden season on the south coast, but struggled to make an impact as the Saints were relegated to the second-tier.

Edozie then adapted well to life in the Championship and notched six goals and three assists in 32 league outings, going on to help Southampton to return to the top-flight through the play-offs.

Football Insider revealed last summer that Sheffield United were lining up a bid to sign Edozie on loan to aid their own promotion push, but he was not keen on staying in the second tier, and so instead moved to Belgian Pro League outfit Anderlecht.

The England youth international was a regular starter as the Purple & White finished fourth, and some impressive form saw Rangers table a bid for Edozie’s services last month, but he now looks set to remain in Belgium with Club Brugge.

Southampton’s dismal Premier League campaign has seen a number of players move on this summer, with Edozie now due to join the St Mary’s exodus, but they have surprisingly been able to keep hold of key man Fernandes up to now.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Saints from Sporting CP last summer, and he was one of their few standouts in the Premier League, with three goals and six assists in 42 appearances throughout his debut campaign.

His impressive top-flight showings have garnered transfer interest after Southampton’s relegation, with West Ham’s former senior scout, Mick Brown, revealing to Football Insider on Thursday (7 August) that the Hammers are lining up a late-window move to sign Fernandes.

His exit would serve as a big blow to new boss Still and the Saints’ promotion hopes, but a move back to the Premier League is sure to appeal, and so they could be resigned to losing their star man soon.
