Stockport County are set to complete the signing of Burnley defender Owen Dodgson on a permanent deal, sources have told Football Insider.

It is understood that the deal should be announced shortly as the Hatters prepare for the 2025/26 League One campaign after missing out on promotion to the Championship.

Dave Challinor’s side finished third in the league table last season, eventually being knocked out by Leyton Orient in the League One play-off semi-finals on penalties.

Now, Stockport appear to be strengthening for another promotion push, looking to Premier League-bound Burnley to add quality and depth to their left-hand side.

Dodgson spent the second half of last season on loan at Burton Albion, where he made 22 appearances, scoring one goal and assisting another four before returning to Turf Moor.

At 22 years of age, the defender has only ever made one senior appearance for the Clarets, which came during the 2021/22 FA Cup campaign, and he is now destined to make the move to Edgeley Park.

Previous moves to Rochdale, Barnsley, and Dundee have all been generally successful for the young defender, but it appears now is the right time for him to seek a permanent move away rather than another loan deal.

He will now join Stoke City’s Nathan Lowe at Edgeley Park, who notched 18 goals and seven assists for Walsall last term, with an almighty squad being built for League One.

Hodgson is not the only player departing Turf Moor this summer, with James Trafford and Josh Brownhill both leaving ahead of a tricky Premier League campaign for the Clarets.

However, Mick Brown has told Football Insider that Burnley are leading the race for Sam Johnstone amid interest from Leeds United and Sunderland, both of whom will be battling relegation.

Parker’s side secured promotion to the top tier of English football automatically last season, finishing level on 100 points with Daniel Farke‘s side, with Sunderland eventually beating Sheffield United in the play-off final.

It is an exciting time for all three clubs, and if the Clarets are to avoid the drop back down to the Championship next season, more reinforcements will be required over the coming weeks.
