Sunderland are unlikely to pursue a move for Leicester winger Abdul Fatawu after exploring a move for the Ghana international, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League new boys had targeted a move for Fatawu, but have decided not to take it any further due to the cost involved, with Leicester valuing him at £30m.

Sunderland are now looking at attacking alternatives and are exploring a move for versatile Red Bull Salzburg forward Adam Daghim, who attracted interest from Atlanta last January.

Daghim is valued at around €13m (£11.2m), and is also a target for several Premier League and German Bundesliga clubs.

Daghim began his professional career in his home country of Denmark with Aarhus, after initially featuring in FC Copenhagen’s academy sides between 2018 and 2021.

He became Aarhus’ youngest ever player in the Danish Superliga when he made his senior debut at 16-years-old in April 2022, and went on to make 11 appearances for their first-team.

Daghim joined Salzburg in 2023 on a three-year contract, and despite initially featuring for their reserve side FC Liefering, he was promoted to the Austrian Bundesliga side’s senior set-up at the start of last season.

The 19-year-old was a regular across the forward line as Salzburg finished second in the league last term, and his impressive showings have alerted clubs across Europe to his potential availability, with Sunderland now primed to make a move and continue their big spending this summer.

The Black Cats have been busy making new signings throughout the summer window following their promotion to the Premier League, and they are clearly not done yet with more players being eyed as potential buys alongside Daghim.

Former chief scout at the Stadium of Light, Mick Brown, told Football Insider on Friday (15 August) that Sunderland are interested in signing Brighton’s Matt O’Riley this summer.

Regis Le Bris’ side are among a number of clubs chasing the Seagulls midfielder’s signature, with Danish international players clearly on the agenda, given his four caps for the Red and Whites.

Brown told Football Insider in June that Brighton will accept offers for O’Riley as Fabian Hurzeler looks to move him on, and the Black Cats could swoop in ahead of Juventus, who have held talks with him over a move.
