Brendan Rodgers could walk away from the Celtic job if he is offered the opportunity to return to the Premier League in the near future.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the manager is frustrated with the lack of transfer activity at Parkhead.

This comes as Rodgers has been linked with the potential vacancy at Nottingham Forest, with speculation rife about Nuno Espirito Santo‘s future.

Football Insider first revealed in April that Rodgers could quit Celtic amid Premier League interest and despite being content to stay at Parkhead, has been left frustrated.

The boss is determined to strengthen his side and to become competitive in Europe, but is concerned the board are happy just to rest on their laurels.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed in April that Rodgers will demand the Celtic board back him and could grow unhappy at Parkhead if they do not agree.

Brown told Football Insider in June that Rodgers could leave Celtic if he is not backed in the summer transfer window amid growing concerns.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience working closely with elite-level managers including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Ron Atkinson and David Moyes, insisted that the boss could walk away if the club do not match his ambitions.

“It’s still a possibility that Rodgers could walk away,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s been talk that he could be considered for the Nottingham Forest job if that comes up, and if he’s offered that role, I think he would take it.

“It seems he’s always had one eye on a potential return to the Premier League.

“I don’t think he’s happy with the support the board have given him in the transfer market.

“He wants to improve his squad, keep that distance between them and Rangers, and be competitive in the European competitions as well.

“But it seems the board are content to rest on their laurels knowing they’re so far ahead.

“If they’re not backing him and not striving to improve, what’s the point of staying there?

“That’s how he will look at it, so he’s been keeping his powder dry and if such an opportunity comes up for him to manage in the Premier League, he’ll take it.”

Despite a frustrating window which has seen just £3million spent so far, the Hoops are advancing in talks to sign Royal Antwerp’s Michel-Ange Balikwisha.

Football Insider revealed on 22 August that Celtic had stepped up their pursuit of Balikwisha amid a belief that a new offer would be accepted.

They are now believed to be nearing an agreement for the winger, who has been a long-term target for Rodgers after missing out on a deal last summer.

Football Insider revealed on 15 August that Balikwisha wants to make the move to Celtic after Rodgers‘ side first declared their interest in him 12 months ago.
