Crystal Palace will not entertain any offers for Jean-Philippe Mateta in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 28-year-old will not be allowed to leave this close to the start of the season.

Instead, the Eagles remain determined to tie him down to a new contract as he is a crucial part of Oliver Glasner’s plans to build on last season’s FA Cup success.

Brown first told Football Insider in December that Palace were planning to hold talks with Mateta over a new contract to deter rival interest.

Reports have claimed the Eagles turned down an offer of £30million for the striker [BBC] amid growing interest in his signature and a high demand for strikers.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed that Liverpool are unlikely to pursue Mateta after landing Hugo Ekitike, despite having held talks with his agent in France.

This article contains exclusive comment from Mick Brown, a football transfer expert and former chief scout for Man United and Sunderland among others.

Brown told Football Insider on 26 June that Palace are confident of keeping Mateta at Selhurst Park alongside the likes of Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that Glasner has no plans to let Mateta move on given his importance to the squad.

“Palace aren’t going to let Mateta go at this point in the window,” he told Football Insider.

“From what I hear, they’re trying to get him signed and committed to a new contract.

“They want him to sign a new deal and they’re hopeful they can reach an agreement, because he’s been a crucial part of the success they’ve had recently.

“The manager loves him and he doesn’t want to let him go either.

“His stance has always been that he doesn’t want to lose his key players, and Palace are happy to agree with that and keep hold of them.

“Mateta is so important to the way they play and he’s scored some really important goals, so it would be incredibly difficult for Palace to go out and replace him.

“It doesn’t surprise me to hear they’ve turned down an offer for him.

“I think his agent has been testing the waters and seeing what interest is out there.

“That won’t make a difference for Palace, though, and I don’t think they’ll be prepared to let him go under any circumstances.

“Especially not this close to the start of the new season.”

Mateta is not the only Palace star attracting interest in the final month of the window, with Marc Guehi subject to intense interest from Liverpool.

Brown told Football Insider on 7 August that Palace plan to accept offers for Guehi this month rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

While Glasner remains keen to keep hold of his captain, there is a belief that his sale for around £40million would allow Palace to spend in the closing stages of the window.

This comes as Brown told Football Insider on 4 August that Liverpool are preparing a new offer for Guehi, who has his heart set on a move to Anfield.
