Man City are preparing to step up their pursuit of Newcastle United star Tino Livramento after missing out during the summer transfer window.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 22-year-old is near the top of City’s list of transfer targets.

Pep Guardiola is set to prioritise the addition of a new right-back after Kyle Walker‘s move to Burnley which has left them short of options in his position.

This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed in February that Man City will prioritise signing a right-back and had begun working to identify targets.

However, Newcastle remain extremely reluctant to lose Livramento given his crucial role in Eddie Howe’s plans for the upcoming season.

Brown told Football Insider in July that Man City scouts watched Livramento at the Under-21s Euros where he played a key role in England’s success.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that signing a new right-back has become key for Guardiola despite the window having closed.

“Livramento is a top target for Man City,” he told Football Insider.

“They lost Kyle Walker to Burnley in the summer because he’s past his best now, but it doesn’t look like they’ve managed to replace him properly.

“A new right-back was one of the priorities for them in the transfer window, but they didn’t get it done.

“From what I hear, Livramento has been one of the names high up on their list.

“He’s tall, he can tackle, he’s very physical and he’s quick, he’s got a lot of good assets to his game.

“So for City, it’s no surprise that he’s on their radar and he’s a player they’ve been looking at for some time to solve the issues they’ve got in that position.”

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider in March that Newcastle are bracing to receive offers for Livramento and work has already started to identify replacements.

A new right-back is not the only concern for City following the close of the transfer window, with centre-back an issue amid concerns about John Stones’ fitness.

The defender was sent home from international duty with England due to a fresh injury blow which ruled him out of their two Euros qualifiers.

However, after Manuel Akanji left to join Inter Milan on transfer deadline day, Guardiola may have been left regretting his decision to let him go.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 22 August that Akanji would have preferred to stay at City and was prepared to turn down interest.
