Newcastle United will turn their attention towards Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz should they miss out on their priority striker targets this summer.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Eddie Howe’s side are running out of options in the window’s closing stages.

Should the Magpies miss out as now expecte on a move to sign Benjamin Sesko, who is believed to prefer a move to Man United, they will be forced to explore other options.

Brown told Football Insider that Ollie Watkins is Newcastle’s second-choice target behind Sesko as Howe is believed to be a big fan of the England international.

However, should they be unable to agree a deal with Aston Villa, Muniz is believed to be another of the names on their list of targets at this late stage.

Football Insider revealed on 23 June that Fulham are confident of pricing clubs out of a move for Muniz as they are determined to keep their star man.

Brown told Football Insider on 25 June that Leeds United want to sign Muniz despite having seen their initial £32million offer turned down by the West London club.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that while he is not a priority on their list, Muniz remains a target for Newcastle.

“Newcastle have a lot of targets but never seen to be able to nail them,” he told Football Insider.

“They have to be prepared for every situation, especially given how their transfer window has gone so far, so they’ve got a list of possible options.

“Everybody knows Sesko is their top target, they’ve made that very clear publicly, but it is starting to look like he would prefer the move to Man United.

“Then I think they’re going to look at Watkins, but it depends what Villa are going to ask for him.

“It seems Muniz from Fulham is one of their targets, he’s one of the names on their list.

“I don’t believe Muniz will be very high on that list, I’m not completely convinced he’s the level of striker they need, but he will be an option.

“It’s a very difficult situation because there aren’t that many top-line strikers available at the moment.

“If they decide they want to do that deal, I think the best way to do it is to keep everything quiet and just work quickly in the background without all the public talk.”

Newcastle have missed out on a number of priority targets this summer and could be set for another blow in their pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Brown told Football Insider that Guehi has his heart set on joining Liverpool and will snub the Magpies’ offer should they return with a fresh move.

As a result, Brown told Football Insider on 5 August that Newcastle are targeting Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke as an alternative to the England international.

Howe is determined to strengthen his defensive unit this summer and views Van Hecke as one of his top targets due to his performances in the Premier League.
