Russell Martin will be sacked by Rangers after an embarrassing start to the season.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Martin is a “dead man walking” and they are only “delaying the inevitable”.

Following Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to Hearts, they are now winless after five league games and were dumped out of the Champions League with a whimper against Club Brugge.

Having dropped nine points below rivals Celtic so early in the season, it has become clear the manager is not the right man for the job.

However, Football Insider revealed on 9 September that the Rangers board are prepared to back Martin despite losing the backing of the supporters.

Brown told Football Insider on 5 September that Martin is facing a battle to save his job at Rangers after losing the support of large sections of the fanbase.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience working closely with elite-level managers including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ron Atkinson at Man United, insisted that the boss has not got long left in his position at Ibrox.

“Russell Martin hasn’t got long left at Rangers,” he told Football Insider.

“The board want to back him, so they’ve put their support behind him, and I can understand they want to stand by him because he hasn’t been in the job for long.

“But there are high expectations at Rangers that are carried by the fans and everybody associated with the club, and they’re not being lived up to.

“The absolute bare minimum at the moment is that they challenge Celtic for the title, but they’re already nine points behind and it’s only been five games.

“At some point, you have to cut your losses and admit you made the wrong decision.

“It’s become clear he’s not the right man for the job, so they’re just wasting time delaying the inevitable by hanging on to him when everybody know’s he’s a dead man walking.”

Rangers fans have already turned on Martin and were calling for his head once again in the wake of their shocking defeat to Hearts.

Meanwhile, a number of former players have spoken out against Martin, adding to the growing pressure on his position, with major improvements needed soon.

This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed on 4 September that Rangers are preparing to sack Martin after Ibrox legends called for his head.

While the board have been keen to throw their backing behind the man who they appointed just four months ago, the pressure from both inside and outside Ibrox is beginning to tell.

Football Insider revealed that Rangers could have no choice but to sack Martin if fans carry out threats to stop attending games should he remain in charge.
