Liverpool are “confident” they will be able to beat off Real Madrid and Barcelona in their pursuit of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that there could be “an agreement” in place with the 25-year-old to make the move.

After his deadline day switch fell through at the last minute, the centre-back will be available on a free transfer next summer, sparking a race for his signature.

Football Insider revealed on 7 September that Liverpool are in “open dialogue” with Guehi as they remain determined to land their top target.

Despite the interest from both Spanish giants, as well as the likes of Bayern Munich and Juventus, Arne Slot’s side remain in pole position to complete the deal.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 2 September that Guehi had his heart set on joining Liverpool and is “disappointed” not to have joined.

Brown told Football Insider on 5 September that Liverpool remain the front-runners to sign Guehi despite rival interest from some of Europe’s elite clubs.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that after the Reds’ deal collapsed, there may still be an informal agreement with the player.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool have an agreement already,” he told Football Insider.

“I’ve seen it happen before, the deal falls through but everything had already been agreed on the players’ side, so they can return to the deal without any issues.

“When you come that close to a deal, all the details are pretty much done.

“It looked like it was a done deal.

“So they know what the player’s asking for, they know he wants to join, it’s just a case of moving forward with the club to bring him in when he’s available.

“Whether it happens in January or at the end of the season, it’s up to them really.

“Liverpool will say with only a year left on his contract, they can save £35million and get him for free.

“Even if there’s interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona as have been mentioned, Liverpool are confident he wants to join them.

“So from their point of view, it’s just a case of making a move again when he’s available.”

One consequence of Guehi’s deal falling through is that Joe Gomez remained at Liverpool, despite late interest from a number of top-level clubs.

Football Insider revealed on 5 September that Crystal Palace and Brighton made moves for Gomez on deadline day, while AC Milan also held talks.

The England international is in no rush to leave Anfield, though, and was happy to stay despite his reduced role in Slot’s plans as he remains a depth option.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed that Liverpool are happy with Gomez, but could allow him to leave if they complete the signing of Guehi in January.
