Expert verdict: Rangers board to cave in to fans as Russell Martin sack news revealed

Fri 5 September 2025 7:00, UK

Russell Martin is facing an “uphill battle” to save his job at Rangers as he has already lost the support of large sections of the fanbase.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 39-year-old needs to turn their recent run of form around quickly.

The boss has overseen four draws from four league games so far, while his side were dumped out of the Champions League following a 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge.

Football Insider revealed last week that Rangers could have no choice but to sack Martin if fans carry out threats to stop attending games should he remain in charge.

Protests following their heavy Champions League defeat saw banners hung outside Ibrox which read: “Get him out now before the seats are empty.”

This comes with Football Insider revealing on Thursday morning that Rangers are preparing to sack Martin following an Ibrox legends mutiny.

Brown told Football Insider on 28 August that Rangers are asking serious questions of Martin after their difficult start to the season.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience working closely with elite-level managers including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ron Atkinson at Man United, insisted that the boss is facing pressure to get the fans back on his side.

“Russell Martin is facing an uphill battle at Rangers,” he told Football Insider.

“You see it happen often, once the fans start to turn it can be the beginning of the end.

“The way he likes to play, and the way Rangers have played so far this season, is not something which is helping him win over the fans.

“It’s been a really poor start for him, he hasn’t won a game in the league and they were smashed in the Champions League as well.

“So there’s pressure on him because of the results on the pitch.

“If the fans turn on him and they make their feelings clear, then that only adds to the pressure.

“I think large sections of the fanbase are already wanting him gone.

“The only way to get the fans back on his side is by winning games, so the results they’ve had so far need to turn around and quickly.

“After the international break, if things continue how they have been so far, then they might have to make a decision to appease the supporters.

“In my experience, boards of directors never deal well with pressure from the fans.”

Following Martin’s arrival earlier in the summer, Rangers aimed to back him with multiple new signings in the transfer window, with work still ongoing.

Brown told Football Insider on 2 September that Rangers want to sign Jesurun Rak-Sakyi from Crystal Palace and could reignite their interest in January.

Martin is known to be a huge fan of the winger, having tried to sign him at Swansea and Southampton, but missed out in the closing stages of the window.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider in July that Rangers want to sign Rak-Sakyi, with Palace planning to accept permanent offers for his signature.
