The Manchester football landscape has taken an unexpected turn with FC United of Manchester announcing the capture of a former Liverpool man.

FC United of Manchester is a fan-owned football club based in Moston, Manchester.

Founded in 2005 by disillusioned Manchester United supporters in response to the Glazer family’s takeover, the club was established to embody supporter ownership and democratic principles.

FC United currently compete in the Northern Premier League and play their home matches at Broadhurst Park.

And indeed, the club is looking to climb up the football pyramid by announcing the coup of former Liverpool man Andre Wisdom.

FC United announced on their official website:

“FC United of Manchester are delighted to confirm the signing of experienced defender Andre Wisdom ahead of the 2025/26 season subject to NPL/FA approval and international clearance.”

“His signing represents a significant addition to the squad and reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to building a competitive and ambitious squad ahead of the new season.”

“Andre will join up with the squad immediately and is expected to feature in our upcoming pre-season fixtures.”

Wisdom, who joined Liverpool’s academy in 2008, made his first-team debut in 2012 under Brendan Rodgers.

Despite making 22 appearances for Liverpool, Wisdom’s opportunities at Anfield were limited due to fierce competition in the squad, leading to several loan spells at clubs such as Derby County, West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, and Red Bull Salzburg?.

In 2017, Wisdom permanently transferred to Derby County, where he spent several years before stints at other clubs, including Derry County most recently.

The signing represents a significant coup for FC United, who are bringing in a player with over 200 professional appearances and experience across multiple leagues.

Wisdom had been out of football for four years before making a return to full-time football at Derry City last year.
