FSG deal won't have 'direct impact' on Liverpool but LeBron could play a part

The potential £536m ($750m) investment in Fenway Sports Group won't have a direct impact on Liverpool, sources close to the deal have said.

Cardinale has been in discussions with FSG over RedBird buying into the business since the deal with his and baseball analytics guru Billy Beane's special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) RedBall Acquisition Corp fell away last month, the SPAC unable to raise the second tranche of investment due to a investor disagreement over the valuation of the FSG business and FSG not entirely sold on the prospect of taking the business public.

"That's the LeBron James connection, he is a part of that and as we know LeBron James has been a minority shareholder in Liverpool for some time and is now a client of Nike who now do Liverpool's kits.

"This investment will not have a direct impact on Liverpool, the Red Sox, NESN and Roush.

RedBird Capital Partners, fronted by American billionaire financier Gerry Cardinale, are expected to take a 10 per cent slice of FSG's operations, which as well as the Reds includes the Boston Red Sox baseball team, NASCAR outfit Roush Fenway Racing and US regional sports cable network NESN.

More likely is that the money will to be deployed to allow for further growth of FSG's revenue streams and a possible expansion of their Fenway Sports Management arm, something which Liverpool minority shareholder and basketball icon LeBron James is a part of.

Investment in their operations is something that FSG have been actively seeking to try and raise some capital during the pandemic as they aim to keep a number of developments on course, including the proposed redevelopment of the Anfield Road End and a considerable real estate regeneration project currently ongoing around the Red Sox's Fenway Park home in Boston.
