The longer it takes to wrap up a new contract for Liverpool's star man, Mohamed Salah, the more the unease about the situation will grow among Reds supporters.

Quite what the hold-up is, it is currently unclear.

Salah is the best player in the world at this current moment, Liverpool would not be able to sign another player who could do an equal job as their number 11, and even if they could, that player would likely be well outside of their transfer budget.

"It was a very big deal," Red Sox reporter, Jen McCaffrey, told the David Ornstein Show recently.

And, of course, there is no obvious destination for Salah to move to where high wage demands (and a long contract to match) would be met, unlike with Betts last year.

That all seems — along with the fact that Salah could easily still have four or five years left at the peak of his powers — like it only leads to one conclusion: that the deal is signed, and Salah becomes the highest-paid player in Liverpool's history.

In 2020, the Boston Red Sox's star man, Mookie Betts, was let go, with FSG determining that was preferable to ceding to his demands.
