Earlier this week, reports from Spain and later reliable UK outlets like the Times reported that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) were exploring the acquisition of Getafe to their portfolio.
The Boston-based group, led by principal owner John Henry, has identified the Madrid-based club as their preferred target after previously abandoning pursuits of French side Bordeaux and Spain’s Malaga.
Part of Michael Edwards return to the fold as FSG CEO of Football was to help identify and construct a multi-club ownership model, similar to what the City Football Group have.
Located in the southern suburbs of Madrid, Getafe has established itself as a stable La Liga outfit with a growing infrastructure.
The club is currently undergoing significant stadium renovations to modernize their 16,500-capacity Estadio Coliseum, with work expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028
The timing of FSG’s interest coincides with Getafe president Ángel Torres’ publicly stated intention to step down and sell the club by 2027 at the latest.
Torres, who has owned Getafe since 2002 and overseen their rise to become an established top-flight team, is reportedly determined to secure the club’s future by finding a buyer who is not only financially capable but also knowledgeable about football – criteria that FSG certainly meets.
The potential acquisition comes at a time of financial strength for FSG, with Liverpool’s value rising by £360 million over the past year to reach a total valuation of £4.19 billion, according to 2025 rankings published by Sportico.
This represents a remarkable return on FSG’s original £300 million investment when they purchased Liverpool in 2010.
When pressed for more information by the Liverpool Echo, a FSG spokesperson did not give anything away in their response:
“FSG routinely engages in conversations and evaluates opportunities across global sports, a common process to assess ventures that align with the organisation’s strategic priorities.”
The multi-club model could provide Liverpool with several competitive advantages that FSG has observed in rivals.
These include facilitating loan deals to give valuable experience to under-21 players and purchasing highly-rated youngsters from overseas who could be developed at sister clubs before potentially joining Liverpool.
