Fabio Carvalho joined Liverpool in the summer of 2022, right after playing a key role in Fulham’s promotion to the Premier League.
Having been friends with Harvey Elliott since their primary school days, there was considerable interest in how the young player would perform.
The 21-year-old began the 2022/23 season on a high note, scoring a critical stoppage-time goal against Newcastle United as a substitute.
However, his momentum didn’t last.
Carvalho’s preferred role as a classic number 10 doesn’t fit into Jurgen Klopp’s tactical plans, which likely contributed to his reduced involvement with the first team as the season progressed.
RB Leipzig saw potential in the U21 Portuguese international, extending a loan offer as a potential reset for his career.
This move to the Bundesliga was viewed as a chance to rejuvenate Carvalho’s prospects at Liverpool.
However, his time at Saxony likewise did not yield any results – and a January switch to Hull City was the solution for the 21-year–old.
Alongside fellow Liverpool man Tyler Morton, Carvalho enjoyed a productive spell with the Tigers.
He made 20 appearances in the Championship, impressing with nine goals and two assists.
And ahead of his return to Liverpool, the former Fulham man spoke about his debut season at Anfield and where he thinks it went wrong for him.
What did Fabio Carvalho say about Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool?
Speaking to Theo Squires for the Liverpool Echo, Fabio Carvalho revealed that an October 2022 game against Nottingham Forest was the turning point for him that season:
“I started that game, we didn’t really play that well,” he began, with Liverpool losing 1-0 at the City Ground on the day.
“And after that game, I just didn’t really have that many chances.
And that was it.”
There had been some reports that Carvalho and Jurgen Klopp had a falling out, and that’s why the 21-year-old was largely frozen out the squad for the second half of 2022/23.
He revealed that had spoken to Jurgen Klopp about his game-time, but that he perhaps should have spoken to the German more:
“Yes, I spoke to him.
Spoke to him not a lot, if I’m being honest with you,” Carvalho admitted.
“Maybe I should have done that, I have should have done that a bit more.”
“But I did speak to him.
He just said, ‘Be patient.
But yeah, I did see him and he said, ‘Just be patient, keep training, and your chance will come.’ That’s all I could ask of him.”
“He was honest with me, he gave me a few pointers on what I could do and what I could improve on, and I just tried to apply that in training.”
