Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Alexander Isak and Liverpool.

The club’s mid-season links to the Newcastle striker have significantly diminished, with the Reds now unlikely to pursue the Swedish forward this summer.

Despite Isak’s prolific form (27 goals in 41 games this season), Newcastle’s firm stance and financial stability have deterred a potential record-breaking deal.

Initial speculation surged in March 2025 when reports claimed Liverpool viewed Isak as an ideal successor to Darwin Nunez.

The 25-year-old’s contract until 2028 and Newcastle’s £150 million valuation posed immediate hurdles.

By April, Newcastle’s compliance with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and CEO Darren Eales’ public refusal to sell “crown jewels” hardened their position.

The Swede’s contract runs until 2028 and talks over a new deal – which could raise his wages to £200,000/week – are reportedly ongoing.

Now Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool and other interested clubs will have to offer Newcastle United a “completely crazy” transfer fee to even consider a sale:

“The message coming from Newcastle is very clear, especially in case of Champions League football,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“The very clear idea of the owners, the management, all the people at the club, is that Alexander Isak will be part of Newcastle’s squad next season.”

“He’s been the desire for many clubs.”

“For example, Liverpool had some contacts at the beginning of the summer transfer window – it’s not started yet officially, but from April and May – to understand the situation of Alexander Isak, but the message from Newcastle was very clear?

They don’t want to sell the player.”

“Same for Arsenal, he’s always been the number one desire for Mikel Arteta but they understand that it’s probably not going to be possible this summer unless they do something completely crazy in terms of transfer fee and offer to the player, so not an easy deal at all.”

It’s then clear.

If Liverpool want Isak, they will have to break the British transfer record and do something ‘completely crazy’ as Romano alluded to.

Furthermore, Real Sociedad still has a sell-on clause that Newcastle United will have to pay out – having signed Isak from the Basque outfit for £63 million in 2022.

For Newcastle, retaining Isak signals their emergence as a genuine force – one capable of repelling Europe’s elite while chasing their own ambitions.
