Fabrizio Romano has provided a brief update on Ibrahima Konate and his contract situation at Liverpool.
Liverpool supporters have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in recent weeks as the club resolved the futures of three cornerstone players.
Captain Virgil van Dijk ended months of speculation by signing a new two-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2027.
This followed Mohamed Salah’s decision to commit his future to the club with a similar two-year extension, ensuring the Egyptian king remains at Liverpool until 2027.
However, these positive developments were quickly overshadowed by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s announcement that he will leave Liverpool when his contract expires this summer.
The 26-year-old academy graduate, who has made 352 appearances and won seven major trophies with his boyhood club, is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Just as Liverpool fans attempt to process Alexander-Arnold’s impending departure, concerning reports have emerged about Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation.
In April, the reliable Lewis Steele asserted that “zero progress” had been made on Ibrahima Konate’s contract extension – with his current deal expiring in 2026.
In a scenario eerily reminiscent of Alexander-Arnold’s situation, both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are closely monitoring Konate’s contract situation.
Reports from Spain indicate that Real Madrid has identified Konate as a primary target for a potential free transfer in 2026, following their successful acquisition of Alexander-Arnold.
Now Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has provided an update on proceedings amid his report on Real Madrid’s interest.
The Italian has claimed that “crucial points” have not yet been agreed upon.
“Real Madrid have decided to go strongly on a new centre-back for the summer transfer window.”
“Ibrahima Konate is in negotiations over a new deal [with Liverpool] but there is still no full agreement on some crucial points.”
“And so, important to mention that Konate is another name on Madrid’s list.”
“He’s out of contract in 2026, so it’s for sure a situation to follow,” Romano said of the French defender.
Many believed Konate was waiting to see what would happen with the “Contract Three”, and that with Van Dijk and Salah committing new terms he would follow soon after.
Currently earning £80,000 per week (£4.16 million annually), it is believed the defender seeks a raise to £200,000 weekly (£10.4 million annually) – a figure that would place him among Liverpool’s top earners.
