Fabrizio Romano has clarified the Florian Wirtz and Liverpool reports that emerged like a whirlwind last week.

Conflicting reports from England and Germany has created uncertainty about the Bayer Leverkusen star’s future.

Last week’s developments began with Manchester City formally expressing interest in Wirtz as a long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, while Liverpool emerged as surprise contenders after hosting the player’s representatives for talks.

This flurry of activity contradicted earlier assumptions that Bayern Munich held pole position.

The midfielder is under contract until 2027, and Leverkusen have set a €150 million (£126.5m) asking price – though this figure is believed to be lower for clubs outside Germany.

The substantial valuation is intended to discourage Bayern Munich, as Leverkusen would prefer to transfer Wirtz abroad rather than strengthen a domestic rival, potentially giving Premier League clubs an advantage in negotiations.

Wirtz’s stock has soared after contributing 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances this season, following a campaign in which he was named Bundesliga Player of the Year and helped Leverkusen go undefeated domestically.

His technical ability, vision, and movement between the lines have made him one of the most sought-after playmakers in world football.

Now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Bayern Munich are not ahead of Liverpool or Man City in the race, which remains wide open as clubs wait for the German international to make a decision:

“No updates yet, we have to wait for Wirtz to make a decision?

It’s still an open story with Bayern, City, Liverpool all involved,” Romano wrote for GIVEMESPORT.

Complicating matters further, Wirtz’s involvement in Germany’s UEFA Nations League campaign (June 4–8) creates a logistical bottleneck.

Germany features in a semi-final against Portugal (June 4) and potential final in Munich (June 8).

Wirtz’s camp will likely defer final decisions until post-tournament, citing focus on national duty.

This means that the saga could last for another few weeks at least.
