Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest on the situation of Ibrahima Konate after reports of a new contract being offered.
Liverpool and the Frenchman are at a nervous crossroads.
In the past 24 hours, reports from Foot Mercato have claimed that the club has actually offered a new contract to the French centre-back, with the proposal stretching until 2029 and including a significant salary increase from his current £70,000–£80,000 per week.
Konate, now 26 and entering the final year of his deal, is being openly courted by Real Madrid.
His current Liverpool contract, signed in 2021, is believed to pay him £70,000 per week.
The French defender is aiming for a much higher salary, reportedly seeking a new deal worth around £200,000 a week.
It is believed that Konate has been left underwhelmed by Liverpool’s opening proposals.
His representatives are pushing for a stronger basic salary, emphasizing guaranteed income over incentive-heavy structures based on performance or bonuses.
Now Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has tapered some expectations.
While he confirms that Liverpool still plans to keep the defender, he does not go as far as to suggest a new official proposal has been sent:
“I can tell you guys that they [Liverpool] are still not opening the doors for this summer for Ibrahima Konate to go to Real Madrid,” revealed the Italian transfer guru
“What I can tell you is that Real Madrid really like the player, he’s really appreciated internally, he’s also been discussed internally with staff and management, but at the moment there is no bid to Liverpool because they are not opening the doors to an exit for Konate this summer.”
“In case they decide to open the door let’s see what Real Madrid will do.
But Liverpool still hope to try and reach an agreement with Konate in the next months.”
The transfer expert added that a deal was close toward the end of last year, but then the situation changed:
“They were close around October, November, then the story changed with Konate and his agents,” Romano explained.
“It has always been a strange negotiation with ups and downs?
Now Liverpool are still hoping to convince Konate to stay, but Real Madrid are following the situation closely.”
