Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest Liverpool transfer news ahead of the exceptional transfer window closing on Tuesday.
While clubs like Manchester City rush to finalise signings for the Club World Cup, the Reds have been able to take their time getting their targets.
It’s widely believed that Liverpool will submit their final offer for Florian Wirtz this week and get the deal across the line.
And while the German international is the main focus at the moment, Arne Slot will also want a striker.
Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal has rekindled its interest in Darwin Nunez after failing to secure Victor Osimhen.
Atletico Madrid also remains a suitor, though their financial constraints make a deal less likely compared to Saudi Arabia’s lucrative offers.
Nunez’s departure will free significant wage space and provide funds for a replacement.
Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak has long been the dream signing for the Anfield club – but it has become clear that the Swede would be exceptionally difficult to try and sign.
And now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that there has been contacts with alternative option Hugo Ekitike in recent weeks – with the club even making some calls for the 22-year-old:
“There are many clubs appreciating Hugo Ekitike.
It’s true that Liverpool like him,” Romano said on the Here We Go podcast on Sunday.
“They [Liverpool] had some contacts to understand the situation.
But at the moment the focus for Liverpool is Florian Wirtz – coming soon, Milos Kerkez – coming soon.”
“They are not advancing for Ekitike but they made some calls over recent weeks to understand the situation of the player, the costs,” Romano added.
“So, he’s a player they like, but let’s see if they decided to go strong on him or another one?
It also depends on the outgoings.”
The Frenchman has scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances, while contributing four goals in Frankfurt’s Europa League campaign.
His overall tally of 22 goals across all competitions has attracted attention from multiple Premier League clubs.
However, Frankfurt’s valuation of their star striker has steadily increased throughout the season, rising from an initial €80 million to a potential €100 million fee.
It’s clear that Liverpool would likely want to chip that fee down before committing to a potential transfer for the Frankfurt striker.
