Liverpool are poised for a major squad overhaul this summer to build on their Premier League title success and not rest on their laurels.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free transfer to Real Madrid all but officially confirmed, the decision-makers at Anfield have a big summer ahead.

Defensive upgrades are a priority, with Bournemouth’s left-back Milos Kerkez (£45m) and center-back Dean Huijsen (£50m clause) linked in a potential £95m double deal.

Since Alexander-Arnold’s announcement, the Jeremie Frimpong links have grown stronger with the Leverkusen defender believed to have a £30 million (€35m) release clause.

There could be plenty of outgoings as well as Arne Slot looks to imprint his own identity on what is essentially still Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

A striker is also a priority with Darwin Nunez touted as having one foot out the door.

And according to Fabrizio Romano, the absolute No.1 option and dream signing would be to replace the Uruguayan with Alexander Isak.

Writing in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter, the Italian revealed:

“It’s still early for this.

The dream is Isak but very, very difficult and so it will be seen later this summer, also based on budget.”

While this is hardly new information, it’s interesting that Romano still thinks Liverpool may have a chance.

It’s been made clear that Alexander Isak would cost an exorbitant amount of money, with prices quoted as much as £150 million – a figure designed to deter suitors rather than facilitate negotiations.

The Swedish international’s blend of technical brilliance, physicality, and elite finishing (22 Premier League goals in 2024/25) makes him an ideal candidate to replace the likely departing Darwin Nunez.

But with Newcastle also on the threshold of qualifying for the Champions League – the chances continue to get slimmer.

Speaking last week, Eddie Howe issued a hands-off warning on his star man:

“[Isak is] not for sale from my perspective,” Howe said.

“I want to build a squad, I want the strongest squad possible for next season.

The end of the season is going to be crucial for us.”

“We have a strong squad and if we can add some players for the first time in a few windows, that will make a massive difference for us so that’s what I’m focused on, not the other way around.”

He then referenced the PSR situation last summer that opened the door for an Anthony Gordon transfer to Liverpool that did not materialize, clearing the air that the Geordie club is in a much better position in the market this time:

“The PSR deadline plays a huge role for clubs – both those clubs with PSR issues and those without – because those without may potentially look to try to sign players.”

“They will look to take advantage of other clubs, as clubs did to us last year, quite rightly.”
