Fabrizio Romano has been discussing the future of promising defender Mikayil Faye ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 19-year-old was signed by Barcelona from Croation outfit NK Kustosija for €1.5 mil in the summer of 2023.

Since then, he has not managed to make a first team appearance for Barcelona, and has instead been playing for the Barcelona’s B team in the third division of Spanish football.

Faye, who is already a Senegal international at his age, is a highly-rated prospect.

In mid-April, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported that Liverpool were interested in the centre-back.

It was reported that he has attracted a growing number of admirers, and Barcelona turned down a €9 million offer for him during the January transfer window from an unnamed club.

It is well-established by now that the Reds will be looking for a central defender in the summer.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho has emerged as a concrete target, with the Ecuadorian making waves in the Bundesliga this season.

Perhaps the Reds hierarchy are looking for an understudy option, of which Faye would be an ideal option in that case.

What did Fabrizio Romano say about Mikayil Faye?

Speaking to CaughtOffside, the Italian transfer guru confirmed that there are ‘ten more clubs’ being spoken about regarding Faye – but Romano stopped short of mentioning Liverpool:

“There are several clubs interested in young Barcelona defender Mikayil Faye, and it’s a player they will have to make a decision on this summer,” Romano began.

“It’s too early to mention specific clubs pursuing him – there are ten or more clubs in the media recently, such as Arsenal and Manchester United, but I can guarantee it’s not something concrete or advanced yet.”

“Still, I expect there to be movement soon.”

“Barcelona have a decision to make on this one – if they want to play and trust Faye or take the opportunity to make profit from his sale.” 

Interestingly, Faye sent out a cryptic post on Instagram amid the transfer speculation around his name – suggesting he would prefer to stay at Barcelona:

The 19-year-old is left-footed and can fill in at left back as well which should be very desirable attributes for Liverpool’s recruitment team.

Not too much else is known about a relatively inexperienced and young player.

He is 6’1” and will likely continue to grow as he comes of age.

He brings a solid physical presence, bolstered by his strength and respectable aerial skills, which allow him to excel in both aerial and defensive challenges.

Additionally, Faye’s speed is noteworthy; and looked extremely fast in comparison to his peers in Croatia’s second tier, and it will be intriguing to see how this aspect of his game adapts to more competitive levels.
