Fabrizio Romano has revealed why the Liverpool deal for Florian Wirtz will take some time despite his Here We Go on the player earlier this week.
Liverpool have reached a full agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to sign German international Florian Wirtz, in a move that will smash both the club’s and the Premier League’s transfer records.
According to German outlet Kicker, which has been highly reliable throughout the summer, the deal is now done between the two clubs, with only a medical and the formalities of contract signing remaining.
The total package for Wirtz is said to be worth around €150 million (£127–£128 million), including both guaranteed and performance-related bonuses.
This figure will make Wirtz the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, as well as the most expensive player ever to move to the Premier League.
The previous record for a British club was held by Chelsea, who paid up to £115 million for Moises Caicedo in 2023.
Leverkusen’s management had been steadfast in their valuation, insisting Wirtz would only leave for a fee close to €150 million.
And while the deal in theory is complete, there is still on thing holding up the deal.
Taking to Instagram, Fabrizio Romano first confirmed that the deal was done:
“Florian Wirtz will be a new Liverpool player, the ‘Here We Go’ was on Tuesday and I can confirm the information; the agreement between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, everything is done and just waiting for the formal steps,” the transfer journalist confirmed.
“Sending all the contracts, signing all the documents, and from Florian Wirtz to complete his medical test.”
The Italian then revealed that Wirtz is currently on holiday, and thus his medical can only be conducted when he returns in the “next days”:
“Why is it not done yet?
Because Wirtz is on holiday now after the games with the German national team,” Romano explained
“As soon as he returns from holidays in the next days, he will complete his medical at Liverpool and sign his contract as a new club record deal.”
“Florian Wirtz to Liverpool was, is, and remains a ‘Here We Go'”.
