Fabrizio Romano has namechecked an option to replace Luis Diaz this summer.

Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has been strongly tipped as Liverpool’s preferred replacement for Diaz should the Colombian complete his anticipated move to Bayern Munich this summer.

L’Equipe suggest the Brazilian would replace Díaz “without a doubt” if the 28-year-old departs Anfield.

The 24-year-old  finds himself at a crossroads at the Santiago Bernabeu, where his playing time has significantly diminished under new manager Xabi Alonso.

During the recent Club World Cup, Rodrygo featured in just 92 minutes across the tournament.

His exclusion from the starting eleven against Juventus, PSG, and other key matches has heightened speculation about his future.

The financial aspects align favorably for Liverpool, with Real Madrid reportedly valuing Rodrygo at between €90-100 million.

This figure closely matches what Liverpool would likely receive for Diaz from Bayern Munich, making it a potentially seamless replacement deal.

Arsenal had initially been considered frontrunners for Rodrygo’s signature, but they have withdrawn from the race after completing the signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea.

But speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano suggested that Liverpool could potentially look to Olympique Lyon winger Malick Fofana to plug the gap left by Diaz should he move to Bayern Munich.

He caveats the hint with by asserting that Fofana is the “plan B” for Bundesliga giants should the Diaz transfer not materialize:

“For Luis Diaz we’re about to enter into important days,” reported the Italian.

“Bayern are expected to bid again for Luis Diaz, I expect their new proposal to be an important proposal to try and tempt Liverpool.”

“The player is already open to joining Bayern, now it depends on Liverpool.

If Liverpool will open the door, Bayern are prepared to go strong to try and close the deal as soon as possible.”

“Otherwise, another name in the list is Malick Fofana at Olympique Lyon,” Romano said.

“But top priority for Bayern is to close the deal for Luis Diaz as soon as possible.”

“Fofana can be a plan B for Bayern, but can also be an interesting option eventually for Liverpool in case the deal for Luis Diaz goes through.”

The Belgian international managed 11 goals and five assists in 41 outings for Lyon last season.

According to The Independent, Lyon have placed an asking price of at least £51.5 million (€60 million) on Fofana – a huge fee.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool would spend that kind of money on a relatively unproven talent.
