Liverpool may have already spent an initial £100million on Florian Wirtz and £69million on Hugo Ekitike in a blockbuster summer transfer window, but their most significant signing could still be on the horizon.

After storming to the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s debut season, the Reds have shown no signs of slowing down.

Head coach Slot, alongside new sporting director Richard Hughes, appears determined to build on that success, with Liverpool’s summer spending now approaching the £300million mark.

The marquee signing so far is undoubtedly Wirtz, whose move from Bayer Leverkusen could eventually rise to £116million – a fee that would break the British transfer record.

But if Liverpool are to land Alexander Isak before the window closes, they may have to go even higher.

The Reds saw a £110million offer for the Sweden striker turned down by Newcastle United last week.

Isak is understood to have told Newcastle he is ready for a new challenge, with Liverpool believed to be his preferred destination.

Reports indicate he has no intention of renewing his current deal, which still has three years remaining.

The 25-year-old missed the Magpies’ pre-season tour of the Far East due to a minor injury and instead trained in Spain with a personal coach.

However, he has now returned to training at Newcastle’s facility, although manager Eddie Howe has made it clear he must “earn the right” to rejoin the first-team squad.

Alexander Isak will not play for Newcastle in the Sela Cup games this weekend despite returning to training this week.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak.

Romano posted on X: “Liverpool mantain their focus on Alexander Isak for the final weeks of the summer window.

“New proposal, ready to be submitted if Newcastle open doors to the move.

“Isak mantains his position; he doesn’t want to play or stay at Newcastle, he wants to leave and join.”
