Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an encouraging update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.
The Reds are in the market for a new striker and have joined the race to sign Ekitike, who is also attracting interest from Newcastle United.
Newcastle are long-time admirers of the 23-year-old after trying to sign him in January and the summer of 2022.
The Magpies had a recent offer worth around €75 million (£65m) rebuffed by Frankfurt?
This has opened the door for Liverpool to move swiftly to explore their own interest.
On Wednesday, Arne Slot’s side made contact with Frankfurt over a possible move for Ekitike.
The Bundesliga side received an approach from the Reds, too, as the Premier League champions look to strengthen their attack with a move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak proving difficult.
Isak is reportedly keen to move to Anfield, however, Liverpool would have to break the British transfer record once again this summer.
Liverpool have already opened talks with Frankfurt to sign Ekitike who scored 22 goals in 48 games across all competitions last season for Frankfurt as they secured Champions League qualification.
The Frenchman joined Frankfurt permanently in a deal worth €17.5m in the summer of 2024, following a loan spell from PSG in the previous campaign.
Romano has revealed that Liverpool are advancing in talks for Ekitike.
He posted on X: “Understand Liverpool are advancing today in club to club talks with Eintracht for Hugo Ekitike.
“While Isak deal depends on final decision by Newcastle as they insist on not-for-sale stanc.
“Liverpool also progressing on both club and player side for Ekitike.”
