Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest on Florian Wirtz, with Liverpool fans hoping for a speedy conclusion to this transfer saga.
This comes following the club’s €100 million (£85 million) opening bid.
The 22-year-old German international has already informed Leverkusen of his desire to join the Premier League champions, delivering a significant blow to Bayern Munich’s transfer plans and marking the most expensive acquisition in Liverpool’s history – should the deal go through of course.
The Bundesliga club originally set a €150 million (£126 million) asking price but now seems willing to negotiate a lower guaranteed sum supplemented by performance-based incentives.
Liverpool’s offer – reported as “over €100 million with attainable add-ons” – aligns with this approach.
Landing Wirtz would represent Liverpool’s boldest transfer move since the acquisition of Virgil van Dijk.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the personal agreement with Wirtz is done, and talks are now centering around the exact structure of the deal between clubs:
“So Liverpool are working on the Milos Kerkez deal and then for Florian Wirtz, agreement with the player done, and conversations underway with Bayer Leverkusen,” the Italian began.
“After the first proposal, they are discussing the bonuses, they are discussing all the details of this deal, but for sure, they are working hard to get the Florian Wirtz deal done, and it won’t take too long.”
“So that’s the message coming from those close to the deal?
And my expectation remains for this deal to be completed for Florian Wirtz to Liverpool.”
The attacking midfielder, who has collected 29 caps for Germany, played an instrumental role in Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023-24, earning himself the league’s Player of the Season award.
The 22-year-old has just completed another outstanding season with 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.
He is the kind of player that the club needs to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold’s creativity.
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed Liverpool’s “concrete interest”:
“He’s our player… but if he decides otherwise, we’ll respect it”
The mention of Liverpool by a Leverkusen official alongside Florian Wirtz is certainly an encouraging indication.
The prospect of seeing the German international in a Liverpool shirt is becoming more and more likely.
