Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Viktor Gyokeres and the reported interest from Liverpool.
Gyokeres has established himself as one of Europe’s leading marksman in the last few seasons.
The Sporting CP striker has been among the top scorers in Europe over the last two seasons, so it is no surprise that his name is being mentioned as one player Liverpool and several other top European sides are looking at.
However, his future has been sipped in controversy recently.
The 27-year-old shattered goal?scoring records with 54 strikes in 52 appearances but has grown increasingly frustrated by Sporting’s reluctance to facilitate his long-awaited move to a top European club.
Gyokeres and his agents accuse Sporting president Frederico Varandas of reneging on a verbal promise to allow his departure for around €70 million, far below the €100 million release clause.
Varandas, however, has publicly denied any such agreement, insisting Sporting “never promised” to forgo the full clause and accusing the player’s representatives of “blackmail” tactics.
In retaliation, Gyokeres has reportedly informed Sporting he will refuse to return for preseason training unless a compromise is reached.
Amid the back-and-forth a recent report in Portugal revealed that Liverpool have officially entered the race for Gyokeres’ signature.
According to the report, the Anfield hierarchy has instructed their intermediaries to establish Sporting’s bottom-line valuation, understood to be in the region of €80 million, and opened formal lines of communication with the striker’s camp.
The news understandably brought about much optimism among Liverpool fans.
However, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the story, revealing that he has not been informed of any ongoing contacts between Liverpool and and the striker.
According to the journalist, the striker is still prioritising a move to Arsenal this summer.
“I’m not aware of contacts ongoing for Gyokeres at this stage?
His priority now is Arsenal, then we will see later in the window,” Romano told GIVEMESPORT.
Liverpool have several strikers on their watchlist, including Ggyokeres’ international teammate, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike.
Ekitike represents a younger unproven option, while Ggyokeres at 27 and Isak at 25 appear to be more established.
However, the Sporting Lisbon man’s lack of success in the Premeir League may be sited as a reason he won’t fit into Arne Slot’s team.
The 27-year-old came through IF Brommapojkarna’s academy before spells in England with Brighton and Coventry City, ultimately joining Sporting CP in 2023 for a club-record fee.
In two seasons with the Lisbon side, the Sweden international has scored 97 goals in 102 games, winning back-to-back Primeira Liga titles and consecutive Bola de Prata awards.
