Bayer Leverkusen have stepped up their efforts to secure the services of Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah this week.
Leverkusen’s renewed interest comes amid their defensive overhaul following the departure of Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich.
The 22-year-old , who broke into Liverpool’s senior squad under Jurgen Klopp, has been identified as a long-term replacement.
Quansah, who signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool in October 2023, has hinted at a desire for regular first-team football, stating at the ongoing European U21 Championship, “I’m in a very good position to take the next step”.
The Reds appear open to offers “for the right money,” valuing their homegrown talent in the region of £40 million, though they are under no pressure to sell unless their valuation is met.
Newcastle United have also maintained their interest in Quansah following failed attempts to sign him last summer, with the Magpies reportedly offering assurances of regular playing time.
Now Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the 22-year-old defender is indeed open to the move to Bayer Leverkusen, with the Italian taking to X to report:
“The player has opened doors to joining Bayer Leverkusen while clubs are in direct contact.”
“After Wirtz and Frimpong deals completed, Bayer and Liverpool are again negotiating for Quansah.”
Any deal for the England U21 international will be separate from the Wirtz transfer.
After making a strong impression during his breakthrough 2023–24 campaign, 22-year-old Jarell Quansah saw his playing time diminish under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot in the 2024–25 season.
His total appearances dropped from 31 to 25 across all competitions, and his number of starts fell to 13 – fewer than the 17 league starts he managed the previous year.
This shift coincided with Arne Slot’s preference for the established central defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
We exclusively revealed that should Quansah be moved on, the Reds will make a move for Marc Guehi.
