Fabrizio Romano has confirmed his latest Liverpool transfer news ahead of another big week in the summer window.
The club’s remarkable start to the summer transfer window has already seen the Premier League champions complete their most expensive signing spree in recent memory.
With the arrivals of Florian Wirtz for a British record £116 million, Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million, and Milos Kerkez for £40 million now secured, the focus at Anfield is beginning to shift toward managing departures as Arne Slot looks to streamline his squad.
The scale of Liverpool’s investment has been staggering, with total spending already reaching £187 million for the summer window.
However, with current income from player sales standing at just £20.8 million, creating a net spend of £166.2 million, the club could allow some summer exits to help balance the books.
One of those exits will surely be Darwin Nunez, who seems destined for the exit door.
The 26-year-old striker endured a difficult 2024-25 campaign that saw his influence wane and his role within the squad diminish.
Across 46 appearances in all competitions, Nunez contributed only seven goals and seven assists – a tally widely considered below expectations for a forward entrusted with spearheading Liverpool’s attack.
Napoli has been touted as his most likely destination.
However, right now the two clubs are far apart in valuation as the Italian transfer guru reveals.
Speaking on his Italian YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano revealed that meetings had taken place last week between Liverpool and Napoli for the transfer of Darwin Nunez – but no agreement has been struck
“I can guarantee you 100 per cent that Darwin Nunez would be very happy to go to Napoli.
The project, the coach, the city, Italian football,” Romano said as translated by Rousing the Kop.
“During the week, Napoli had direct contact with Liverpool, even a meeting, and in these contacts at the moment they have not yet come close to agreeing on the figures.
“Liverpool’s demands remain very important, between 65 and 70 million Euros [£55-60m] minimum as a starting point.
“Napoli start further back, so at the moment agreements are not close yet for Nunez.
It is not close or imminent and requires slow and steady progress.”
“It is also clear that Napoli must match the numbers on Nunez’s salary,” Romano explained.
“Even on this we are not yet at the finish line?
But the player is available, and this can certainly help.”
