Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has dominated headlines this summer but remains unresolved as the two clubs edge towards September 1.
The Reds’ opening bid of £110 million plus add-ons was swiftly rebuffed, with Newcastle insisting on closer to £150 million and refusing to entertain negotiations
Isak, who netted 23 league goals last season, has expressed his desire to join Anfield, prompting him to train away from Newcastle’s first team and miss their opening 0–0 draw at Aston Villa.
With his absence drawing protests from supporters, Newcastle’s hierarchy face pressure to either reintegrate or sell the 25-year-old before the window shuts.
A recent update from journalist Craig Hope suggests Newcastle remain focused on signing Brentford’s Yoane Wissa first, viewing that deal as key before sanctioning an Isak sale.
Now Fabrizio Romano has revealed just how far the Magpies have went to try and keep Isak, from record contract offers to exit clauses:
“Newcastle, in these recent weeks, have always tried to approach Alexander Isak and always tried to say ‘are you sure there is not one single way to continue together?'” said Romano on his YouTube channel.
“They even offered him a new contract with a record salary from the club, but also with an exit clause to let the player go in 2026.”
“Alexander Isak is again saying ‘no chance.’ He has no intention to change his mind – only Liverpool Football Club.”
Romano added that Newcastle maintain their confidence in signing Yoane Wissa this summer:
“Newcastle need a replacement, we know the [Yoane] Wissa situation at Brentford.”
“Brentford are still blocking Wissa but Newcastle remain confident on receiving greenlight and then, look for a proper No.9 before giving greenlight for Isak.”
Isak is not expected to attend Tuesday night’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) awards gala.
Although he has been nominated for the main award, uncertainty over his future at St James’ Park will keep him away from the ceremony.
