9.
Among several clubs that were credited with interest in Nunez, Napoli appeared to be the most serious.
The Serie A champions were said to have made Nunez their primary target for the No.
9 position.
They had even reached an agreement with Nunez, who was said to be keen on the move.
However, the deal is said to have collapsed primarily due to Liverpool’s asking price.
The Reds were reportedly demanding over €55m for Nunez, a figure Napoli were not willing to pay.
With Antonio Conte’s side now out of the race for Nunez, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on his future and what to expect before the summer window closes.
“He is still trying to find a solution to leave Liverpool this summer,” Romano said when asked what is next for Nunez after the failed Napoli move.
“Napoli was quite disappointing for the player from what I can tell you, because the player was really open to joining Napoli.
But Napoli felt that the price was too expensive for Darwin Nunez, which is why they didn’t proceed with this deal.
They have closed the deal for Lorenzo Lucca, who is today in Italy for medical tests and contract signings, with Napoli paying €35m.
“For Darwin (Nunez), it could have been at least €55m-60m, so Napoli decided not to proceed.
I think Saudi can still be a solution for Darwin Nunez, with important proposals to come.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle are said to have indicated interest in signing Nunez, after missing out to Liverpool on Hugo Ekitike.
