Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the next Liverpool manager this morning.

It feels like the new manager search is starting to drag a little bit, with Jurgen Klopp announcing back in January that he intends to step down as the Liverpool boss at the end of the season.

Xabi Alonso was the favourite, but it seems Ruben Amorim has risen in priority of the Spaniard announced he would be staying at Bayer Leverkusen next season.

Of course, attempting to bring in a new manager during the season is not easy, with Ruben Amorim occupied with trying to win the Liga Portugal over Benfica.

Liverpool too have crucial games coming up, including tonight against Atalanta, where they must attempt to turnaround a three-goal deficit.

Even though the Reds are renowned for their comebacks, particularly in European tournaments, a three-goal deficit might be too much to overcome this time.

Encouraged by their first-leg triumph, Atalanta will concentrate on preserving their defensive toughness and taking advantage of counterattacking possibilities.

Atalanta’s strong form at the Gewiss Stadium this season adds to the challenge, having suffered only three losses in 20 matches, with 10 clean sheets and just 15 goals conceded.

However, Fabrizio Romano has asserted that the recent talk about a new manager is just down to the European tie.

Fabrizio Romano rules out Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini

Earlier this week, there was some tentative media talk about Gasperini being linked with the Liverpool job, with the Atalanta manager himself saying he is ‘happy’ to be mentioned alongside such a prestigious club.

However, the Italian transfer guru quashed any notion that Gasperini is an option:

“Gian Piero Gasperini will have raised some eyebrows yesterday when he addressed rumours about him being in contention for the Liverpool job,” Romano began for CaughtOffside.

“For sure, Gasperini has done a fantastic job at Atalanta in recent times so I’m not too surprised that, after beating Liverpool in such a convincing way with that 3-0 win at Anfield last week, there is some media speculation about him possibly replacing Klopp, but there’s nothing more to it than that.”

“I can say that there’s nothing at all between Gasperini and Liverpool from what I know.”

“I think these are links just generated by Atalanta’s super game vs Liverpool at Anfield, that’s it.”

“As for other clubs, again there will always be links, but for now I see him staying at Atalanta.”

The Reds face Atalanta tonight in Bergamo with a strong reaction needed after Crystal Palace at the weekend.
