Fabrizio Romano has revealed the latest on Liverpool and their summer plans ahead of a ‘busy’ transfer window for the Reds.

Despite the extensive reworking and remodeling done in midfield last summer, there is still the feeling that Liverpool’s squad needs some work.

Certainly, amongst opposition fans, there was a feeling that the Reds’ squad was simply too thin to go all the way in the Premier League this season.

During the busy period in between January and March this season, Jurgen Klopp was missing plenty of key players such as Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Curtis Jones.

The defensive sector is one area where Liverpool could use some reinforcements.

Virgil van Dijk will be 33 in July, while Ibrahima Konate can sometimes find himself susceptible to injuries.

This season the Frenchman missed eight games due to injury, while also missing 15 games in 2022/23.

Joel Matip is almost certain to leave with his contract expiring in the summer combined with his unfortunate ACL rupture in December last year.

Jarell Quansah has proved a valuable asset, and the club will likely look to build around the immense talent of the 21-year-old.

Nevertheless, it’s clear to see that a new central defender is needed sooner rather than later – with Konate being the last one bought all the way back in 2021.

What did Fabrizio Romano say about Liverpool?

Unsurprisingly, the Italian transfer guru claimed that the Reds are prioritizing a new centre-back in the summer, suggesting that the club are ‘already’ working on it:

“It could be busy, I think it could be busy,” Fabrizio Romano said of Liverpool and their upcoming summer transfer window on the Debrief Podcast (via The Boot Room).

“A new centre-back for sure, they are working on that already.”

“So, a new centre-back and I think something in the offensive positions.”

“I expect Liverpool to complete something like two or three signings this summer.”

It is good to hear that, according to the Italian, the Reds are actively engaged in finding a defender.

Who could Liverpool be looking at?

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho has been name frequently linked to Liverpool.

The Ecuadorian has impressed in the Bundesliga, and is believed to be valued at approximately €50-60m according to Sky Germany.

Pacho won the Belgian Pro League under the management of Mark van Bommel in his debut season with Royal Antwerp.

Another name that Fabrizio Romano claimed had more than ’10 clubs’ after him is Barcelona starlet Mikayil Faye.

A Senegal international at 19 years of age, he did enough in the Croation second division for Barca to pay €1.5m for him in the summer of 2023.

Barcelona turned down a €9 million offer for him during the January transfer window from an unnamed club.

At his age, Faye could be the perfect understudy for Virgil van Dijk as he gradually phases into the first team setup at Anfield.
