Giovanni Leoni’s impressive debut was cut short after being stretchered off the pitch.

The Reds continued their winning start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Southampton in the EFL Cup, but a few events overshadowed the game as a whole.

Not only did Hugo Ekitike’s red card take most of the media attention, but Leoni’s injury was also a worry for everyone associated with Liverpool.

The Italian defender had an impressive debut but he was forced off the pitch in the 81st minute after a heavy landing on the touchline.

The severity of the injury was unknown at the time, but the fact he was stretchered off made fans fear the worst, and it appears as though they were right to after the most recent update.

Injuries are always a massive worry, but when people hear ‘ACL’, everyone starts to panic and fear the worst.

This knee injury is one of the worst any footballer can suffer, with it often leading to a player missing almost the entire season.

And unfortunately for Liverpool’s young defender, he appears to have done just that, with Fabrizio Romano confirming it on his X account.

Leoni is expected to be out for several months and will have to try his best to be back before the end of the season, although he will be cutting it fine.

It is a nightmare end to an all-but perfect night for the 18-year-old, with fans left raving about his performance after seeing him in a Red shirt for the first time.

However, this will severely halt his progress and mean that Liverpool’s defence is looking light on options again, something that could cost them in the title race.

Earlier in the summer, Liverpool were desperate to bring in at least one centre-back due to their options being limited, with Leoni being the one that came in.

They almost got another through the door at Anfield but Marc Guehi’s move collapsed at the eleventh hour, something that now looks like even more of a blow.

After Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, that now just leaves Joe Gomez as the only other out-and-out option in this position, meaning they desperately need him to stay fit.
