Liverpool fans have every right to feel a little frustrated at buckling under the pressure in the Premier League title race.

Everyone expects Manchester City to be there till the very end, and if anyone was going to mess it up, then it was going to be Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Yet, surprisingly, it’s Liverpool now waiting for Manchester City to beat Fulham at the weekend to all but ensure that Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of winning a Premier League title in his final campaign are over.

The last Liverpool captain to stop Pep Guardiola’s steam train from winning the title was Jordan Henderson.

Yes, it’s still in the hands of Manchester City with very few games remaining, but Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard can join that list if the unthinkable happens during these coming weeks.

The 25-year-old is one of the best players in the Premier League and a key reason why his team have been able to remain mentally strong.

Owen Hargreaves thinks, after Liverpool beat Tottenham at Anfield, they have their own version of Odegaard at their disposal in the form of Harvey Elliott.

The 21-year-old scored a stunning goal against Spurs, with Hargreaves describing that effort as a ‘brilliant finish from a fabulous young player’, as he told Premier League Productions (06/05/24 at 5:25 pm).

The Fulham academy product can operate as a number eight or out on the right flank.

But Hargreaves made it clear that he prefers Elliott playing more in the middle and he has the footballing brain to do so.

“When you get into certain positions on a pitch, you have pictures,” said Hargreaves

“If you are there, left-footed, he is going to whip that to the back post.

I think he could be like an Odegaard for Liverpool.

Absolutely fabulous.”

Odegaard will know everything about having to deal with such a ferocious spotlight early on in your career.

As a fresh-faced teenager, he was seen as one of the best wonderkids and his raw talents got him a move to Real Madrid.

Whilst Elliott didn’t play for a club the size of Madrid, he did become the Premier League’s youngest-ever player in 2019 and a lot has been expected of him.

With the right people around him at Liverpool, he hasn’t let that get to his head, he is progressing and showcasing very good signs going forward.
