A fan-led review of football conducted alongside the Government will aim to make it tougher for clubs to form breakaway leagues - and hand more power to supporters.

The Government committed to a review of the footballing landscape following Bury's expulsion from the Football League in 2019 due to financial difficulties.

The review, which will be published tonight (November 24), has been chaired by Conservative MP and former sports minister Tracey Crouch and it recommends an independent regulator be set up to aid in football governance.

Fair Game - a group made up of representatives from different clubs pushing for reform in football - had earlier said the results of the initiative represent a 'momentous day'.

The findings of the review will potentially lead to widespread changes in the game, with a recommendation made to establish an independent regulator for football.

Given the widespread unpopularity of the European Super League by all fans, the implementation of this proposal would make it impossible for clubs to join breakaway leagues without the approval of their supporters.

In 2021, the failed attempt from Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to set up a European Super League along with six other clubs on the continent triggered the review process.
