Federico Chiesa’s Anfield adventure looks set to come to an end this summer, as the Italy international has been conspicuously absent from Liverpool’s pre-season preparations and made just 14 appearances in the 2024/25 campaign.

Chiesa now finds himself surplus to requirements under Arne Slot, with plenty of Serie A clubs circling for his signature.

After scoring in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Stoke City last month, Chiesa was nonetheless omitted from the 29-man squad that departed for the Asia tour.

While the club cited a “minor fitness issue,” the decision underscores how far he has fallen down the pecking order compared with fellow forwards Luis Díaz and Darwin Nunez, both of whom earned spots on the plan despite their transfer speculation.

Across all competitions in 2024/25, Chiesa featured in only 14 matches, starting just once in each of the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

And it seems that an Anfield exit is one step closer.

Last week, the Times reported that once Atalanta sell Ademola Lookman, likely to Inter Milan, they would move for Federico Chiesa as a replacement.

Now it seems Lookman is pushing desperately for the move, and has now made a statement claiming that he was promised a move on certain conditions only for the Bergamo side to go back on their word:

“I have loved every moment but feel that now, after three wonderful years in Bergamo, it is the right time to move on and experience a new adventure,” read Lookman’s statement.

“There have been numerous clubs approach Atalanta in the past and I have previously always stayed loyal.”

“However, myself and the ownership of the club have been in agreement that now is the right time and the club were clear with me that if a fair offer came in they would allow me to move.

“Despite now receiving an offer in alignment to what I believe had been discussed sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand.

The Nigerian international then confirmed that he handed in a formal transfer request:

“As a result and after many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right and feel that enough is enough.

“I can confirm I have now handed in a formal transfer request.”

With Ademola Lookman publicly submitting his transfer request a significant slice of wage budget and squad space looks set to free up at the Gewiss Arena this summer.

That financial windfall would instantly position Atalanta to pursue Chiesa.
