The start of this summer had looked bleak for Federico Chiesa.
The Italian was conspicuously omitted from Liverpool’s 29-man pre-season tour squad for their Far East expedition to Japan and Hong Kong.
While the club cited a “minor fitness issue” as the reason for his absence, the decision raised serious questions about his future on Merseyside.
The exclusion from such a high-profile tour, particularly when other fringe players made the cut, suggested Chiesa had fallen significantly down the pecking order under Arne Slot.
His debut season at Liverpool had been hampered by persistent injury problems and adaptation issues.
The former Juventus star managed just 14 appearances across all competitions in 2024-25, with only three Premier League outing,
But it appears that the goal against Bournemouth has changed everything, as well as Liverpool’s summer outgoings.
Indeed, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Italy international has clearly told the Anfield club that he intends to stay on Merseyside this summer despite all the speculation:
“Federico Chiesa and his agent have informed Liverpool about clear desire to stay at the club,” the transfer expert said.
“Chiesa considered to leave in June/July when Liverpool rejected bids for Diaz and Federico was left out of Asian tour.”
“Now Diaz left, more space and that goal to open new chapter.”
Chiesa delivered when it mattered most against Bournemouth, volleying home in the 88th minute to restore Liverpool’s lead in what became a thrilling 4-2 victory.
The goal sparked wild celebrations at Anfield and may have convinced both player and club of the match.
It’s the kind of goal that can reignite a career, and hopefully that’s the case for the Italian.
