Filip Jorgensen deserves more time to prove himself to Enzo Maresca and Chelsea fans despite his poor showing against Man United in Robert Sanchez’s absence over the weekend.
That is the verdict of former England and Southampton star Matt Le Tissier, who told Football Insider exclusively that he believes Jorgensen still has a bright future ahead of him as he is still very young for a top-level goalkeeper.
Robert Sanchez clattered into Bryan Mbeumo and earned himself a straight red card within the first five minutes of Chelsea‘s Premier League clash against Man United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Sanchez received the quickest red card in Chelsea’s Premier League history from referee Peter Bankes, and young winger Estevao was sacrificed as Jorgensen entered the field for his first appearance of the 2025-26 season.
The Denmark international stopper was unable to stop Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro quickly firing the hosts into a 2-0 first-half lead, and his side failed to stage a fight-back late on as Chelsea lost 2-1 to Man United following Trevoh Chalobah‘s late header.

Jorgensen featured in just six top-flight games in 2024-25 as he was unable to consistently displace Sanchez in Maresca’s starting eleven.
The 23-year-old could do little about Fernandes’ well-taken opener for the Red Devils on Saturday, but he received criticism for his role in Casemiro’s strike after failing to claim a sliced Reece James clearance before Harry Maguire set the Brazil midfielder up to score at the back post.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the backlash Jorgensen faced for his performance at Old Trafford, Le Tissier said: “A cracking result for Manchester United against Chelsea, but the game wasn’t without its controversies after a red card after five minutes for Robert Sanchez.
“Now I don’t think he can have too many complaints about that, but there were a few complaints about his replacement, Filip Jorgensen.
A lot of people have suggested that, perhaps its an area that Enzo Maresca has to strengthen for Chelsea to be real title contenders, but I think sometimes we are a little too quick to judge in these situations.
“I mean, the boy is 23 years of age…he’s a baby for a goalkeeper.
Honestly, it’s very early on in his career, I think we’ve got to give the kid a little bit of time, stop with criticising people so early on in their careers, and just let them grow into the players that they’re going to be.”
Jorgensen is, at the very least, likely to be used again by Maresca this week while Sanchez serves his one-game suspension as Chelsea take on Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (23 September).
Jorgensen will not have expected to be called upon in such testing conditions against United on Saturday, and he was not the only Chelsea player that struggled to make their mark on a tough afternoon for all connected to the club.
Even though Sanchez played well in the first few games of the campaign, his shocking showing against the Red Devils will surely see him fall down the pecking order, even when he returns from suspension.

Maresca recently insisted that Jorgensen will be given chances for Chelsea in the Premier League this season, after he also started Sanchez in their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich.
Djordje Petrovic sealed a move to Bournemouth in the summer to provide the pathway for the 23-year-old to become the Spaniard’s full-time back-up after he was a mainstay in the Conference League last term.
He now needs to grab any chance that he gets to start for the Blues with both hands, as the starting spot in Maresca’s side is clearly up for grabs until he can potentially make a new signing in January.
