Man United are facing the prospect of giving Ruben Amorim a sizeable exit package having spent a significant sum to bring him to Old Trafford last season.
That is according to football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the hiring and firing of managers for the Red Devils is proving to be an “expensive business”.
In October 2024, Man United sacked Erik ten Hag with the club sitting 14th in the Premier League, having picked up three league wins in their opening nine games.
Following Amorim‘s appointment, finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Man United had spent £70million on new managers since Alex Ferguson left his post in 2013.
And that number could be set to climb further soon.
The Red Devils have made their worst start to a Premier League season in 33 years and Man United were handily beaten by Man City 3-0 on Sunday, 14 September.
Amorim has made clear that he will not change his tactical system in spite of his side’s failure to adapt to the 3-4-2-1 shape the ex-Sporting CP boss employs.
And with the walls closing in and another season at risk of being over before it has truly begun, United must now decide on whether to splash out on firing another new manager.

Speaking to Football Insider exclusively, Plumley explained how much it would likely cost for United to sack Amorim, based on his current contract being worth £10m a year [BBC Sport].
He said: “It’s an expensive business.
We’ve seen Manchester United go down that road with high compensation fees for managers in the past, and if you look at the kind of baseline numbers, it’ll be somewhere in the middle of what the contract is worth.

“So if he is on £10 million a year, and it’s another two years to run, for argument’s sake, that’s a £20m contract for him if he stays in that role.
“The release clause, therefore, might be set a little bit lower than that, or it’ll be somewhere in the lines of negotiation.
“And then, of course, to bring a new manager in, you’ve got the cost of that salary as well, so it is a costly business, hiring and firing managers.”
Having spent significant sums to bring Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford this summer, more signings seem likely as the Red Devils will be desperate not to let another season go to waste.
