Finance expert stunned as Man City finalise deal that's 'destabilised the whole team for £2.6m'

Ederson’s prospective move from Man City to Fenerbahce has “destabilised the whole team”, according to a Football Insider finance expert.

The Cityzens have been extremely active in the transfer market this summer, especially in the goalkeeping department after re-signing James Trafford from Burnley.

The Englishman’s signing stemmed from the uncertainty over the future of Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson who is on the cusp of a reported £12million deal to join Fenerbahce (The Daily Mail).

His departure is part of a domino effect as sources told Football Insider that Man City are at final stages of talks with PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

However, finance expert Stefan Borson finds the proposed chain of moves bizarre for both the former Benfica shot stopper and City.

Taking to X (1 September), Football Insider columnist Borson gave his thoughts on the goalkeeping domino effect gripping the final day of the transfer window.

He found the proposed move a strange one for Ederson, Pep Guardiola and the blue half of Manchester, saying: “Ederson to Fenerbahçe makes no sense.

“Actually costs the player money as prevents a free deal next Summer, no CL [Champions League], no guarantee new coach wants him and uproots entire family at the end of the Summer.

Very odd deal if true.

“As for City, what have they got from the Ederson fiasco?

Very odd deal all round.”

Football Insider verdict

After a two-year hiatus away from the Etihad, the Englishman would have felt he timed his return to his boyhood club at precisely the right time, given the uncertainty over both Ederson and Stefan Ortega.

Yet, a shaky start to the 2025-26 campaign has given Guardiola a reason to plunge back into the transfer market to find a better option.

Trafford has kept one clean sheet in three matches, conceding four times as the Cityzens have struggled to kick on after their 4-0 thrashing of Wolves.

The Italian’s arrival at the Etihad would be a major statement from the club to strengthen their keeping department, usurping the 22-year-old of his starting role.

With the World Cup fast approaching, this is a huge blow for the six-foot-six shot stopper who will be gutted to see his minutes likely drop.

Thomas Tuchel will be keeping a keen eye on who will be his number one for the international tournament and Trafford’s push for the number one shirt looks to be in jeopardy.
