Fifa president Gianni Infantino has suggested he could yet support the Super League in a move that will pique the interest of Liverpool and other clubs that dropped out. That is the view of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Infantino’s latest Super League comments.

Infantino publicly stated that Fifa “strongly disapproved” of the projected plans in April 2021, days after Liverpool and their English peers pulled out. But it seems he has since had a change of heart, with suggestions that the Super League and Infantino’s Club World Cup plans could usurp the Champions League. Plumley believes Fifa support would be a major step forward for the Super League proposals, helping them hop a legal hurdle that proved tough to navigate the first time around.

“So any support from Fifa towards the Super League would be a huge positive for those clubs that are hanging on to the proposals. “There’s still a long way to go of course but they are the hardest challenges they’ve faced so far so if Gianni Infantino is ready to discuss the proposals then the Super League organisers will be jumping on that.“
