Graham Potter faces increasing pressure at West Ham United following the club’s 3-0 loss away at Sunderland last weekend.

Potter’s side are back in action tonight opening up their home account this season playing Chelsea at the London Stadium.

The ex-Brighton manager took charge of West Ham in January this year, with the club sacking Julien Lopetegui as the club flirted closely with relegation.

After managing to stave off the drop the club lost Mohammed Kudus as the Ghanaian international joined Tottenham Hotspur, and the summer recruitment has been poor in response.

As the pressure builds on Potter in East London, Troy Deeney has contributed his thoughts on the situation at the club.

Potter, who has also had spells at Swansea City and Chelsea, has been unhappy with West Ham’s summer business.

During his pre-match press conference Potter highlighted poor recruitment of the past, with Deeney suggesting: ” there’s too much finger pointing,” while talking to talkSPORT.

Deeney continued: “West Ham is a massive club and collectively they’ve got it wrong for a long time,” while focussing on discussions over the club’s transfer approach.

The board have struggled to reinvest money into the side in recent years with Jarrod Bowen and Kudus two of a limited crop that West Ham can say they’ve purchased well.

This summer, Callum Wilson headlines a summer recruitment programme that has reinforced last season’s squad but failed to truly push the club away from their relegation scrap.

Football Insider verdict

After two seasons of seeing all three promoted sides go straight back down, the 2025-26 Premier League season promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory.

Sunderland and Leeds United have both heavily invested and earned opening weekend wins with many thinking they can give some of the league’s recent mainstays a run for their money in the hunt for survival.

West Ham and Brentford have been touted as relegation sides in the making as their squads look stagnant despite the gap closing between the newly promoted teams.

Having banked over £60million in Kudus’ transfer Potter will hope to see some of that money reinvested in the attacking areas of the pitch as Bowen and Niclas Fullkrug remain the club’s only attacking threat at current.
