Liverpool got off to a poor start as the Premier League returned with Jürgen Klopp’s side being outbattled by Fulham, led by star striker Aleksandar Mitrovi?, who netted a double.

Liverpool simply never got going in the game and struggled to match the Fulham intensity — being outplayed and outfought for large parts of their opening fixture.

Mitrovi? scored the first with a header as Liverpool struggled to cope with his physical presence and then drew a rash foul in the second half from Virgil van Dijk, either side of a Darwin Núñez equaliser.

Thiago showed one or two moments but looked rusty in general and then went off injured early in the second half, while Henderson and Fabinho looked miles off the pace for the majority of the match.

While many would have plumped for handing Darwin Núñez a Premier League debut from the start, the argument for Roberto Firmino was a reasonable one.

This was not the best performance that Mohamed Salah has put in on the first day of the season, but he maintained his record of having netted in the opening fixture every season he has been a Liverpool player.
