Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed what needs to happen for Liverpool to make a move for Hugo Ekitike.

Widespread reports have credited Liverpool with concrete interest in the Eintracht Frankfurt striker.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Ekitike would be as a direct replacement for Darwin Nunez, who is now headed for the exit door.

The Uruguayan striker managed just five Premier League goals last season and has attracted interest from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, though he remains open to both Saudi and European options

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg earlier reported that the Anfield club has already held preliminary talks with the Frenchman.

The race for Ekitike’s signature intensified after Manchester United made their move within the last 48 hours.

Plettenberg confirmed that United have “officially entered the race” and “made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt, expressed concrete interest, and gathered all relevant information.”

Now, the Sky journalist has provided a fresh update on the reported links to Ekitike.

According to Plettenberg, Liverpool’s move for Ekitike is largely dependent on the departure of a striker, in this case, Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguay international is increasingly looking like he will leave Liverpool this season, with clubs in Saudi Arabia and across Europe expressing interest.

DaveOCKOP reported that the club will spend big on a striker once the 25-year-old departs.

And now Plettenberg has reported that the Reds are still very much keen on Ekitike, but will only move for the Frenchman if they sell Nunez.

“Liverpool see themselves having a very good chance in the race for Hugo Ekitike,” Plettenberg wrote on X.

“However, they have clearly signalled that they still need some time, as sales (including Darwin Nunez) need to happen first.

Ekitike is aware of this.”

The journalist also clarified that despite the collapse of Ekitike’s reported Chelsea move, the Blues remain in the race, while Manchester United have also made an enquiry for the 22-year-old.

“Chelsea remain in the race,” he added.

“Manchester United have called Eintracht Frankfurt, as revealed?

All three teams have received the same information: his price tag is €100m.”
