Liverpool have made a major move in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, submitting an initial offer worth over €100 million (£85 million) as talks between the two clubs intensify.
The 22-year-old German international has already agreed personal terms with Liverpool and is now waiting for the clubs to finalize an agreement before undergoing a medical.
Leverkusen, who finished second in the Bundesliga under Xabi Alonso, have publicly acknowledged Liverpool’s “concrete interest” in Wirtz, confirming that negotiations are ongoing.
Discussions resumed on Monday, with both sides eager to avoid a drawn-out process and reach a resolution swiftly.
Wirtz is viewed as the creative force Liverpool need, especially as the club looks to add attacking invention to replace the influence of Trent Alexander-Arnold in advanced areas.
The proposed £126 million outlay would smash Liverpool’s previous transfer record, set at £85 million for Darwin Nunez, though the club is exploring ways to potentially reduce the guaranteed fee through structured payments or player exchanges.
Crucially, Wirtz has made it clear that Liverpool is his preferred destination, having turned down interest from Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and other top European sides in favor of a move to Anfield.
Now Sky Sports Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri has reported that talks are positive on a €150m package, with the German international ready to sign a five-year deal at Anfield:
“Talks are still underway about Florian Wirtz with Liverpool’s confidence increasing in order to make it happen around a €150M package,” he wrote on X.
“Leverkusen not easy with installments but all parties are working on the same line.”
“German midfielder’s expecting final green light to jump into a private jet & sign his 5 years deal?
Just a matter of time…”
Wirtz rejected Bayern Munich’s advances despite their status as Bundesliga champions, with club president Herbert Hainer admitting defeat: “Max Eberl informed me Wirtz leans toward Liverpool”.
Manchester City also withdrew after deeming the financial package “unworkable,” despite initial interest in replacing Kevin De Bruyne.
It is believed that the player wants the transfer wrapped up before he joins Germany’s UEFA Nations League squad on June 2.
