Florian Wirtz is set to complete a club-record transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool, with the deal expected to be finalized ahead of the weekend. The transfer fee could rise to £116 million (€136 million), making it one of the most expensive in football history. After two bids were rejected, Liverpool agreed on an initial £100 million payment plus up to £16 million in bonuses. Once all add-ons are triggered, Wirtz’s transfer would surpass the fee paid by Chelsea for Moisés Caicedo in 2023.

Wirtz, a 22-year-old Germany international, is flying to Merseyside to undergo a medical, signalling that the move is imminent. Liverpool reportedly outbid Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Real Madrid to secure his signature. Senior Liverpool figures are hopeful Wirtz can have a transformational impact similar to that of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, who both joined Liverpool in 2018.

This signing will be Liverpool’s second in the summer, following Jeremie Frimpong’s arrival from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5 million. The club is also set to sign Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez for approximately €45 million ($51.99 million), indicating a significant investment in defensive reinforcements.

Wirtz’s acquisition reflects Liverpool's ambition to strengthen their squad substantially in the 2025 transfer window and build a team capable of competing at the highest levels domestically and in Europe.
