Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has defended Florian Wirtz amid some of the criticism that has been leveled against the Liverpool star after a difficult start to the season.

It has been a tricky start to life on Merseyside since the 22-year-old made the $157 million switch from Bayer Leverkusen.

Although Wirtz has started every game for Liverpool so far this season, he has only recorded one assist during the Community Shield at Wembley.

Matthaus though has jumped to the defense of Wirtz, believing that his move to Liverpool may have affected his recent performances.

"It's a given in football that whistles sometimes target individual players,” Matthaus wrote in his column for Sky Sport.
